The Perfect Day in Glaslough
Explore the gorgeous village of Glaslough on a daytrip from Dublin or Belfast. Considered to be a jewel in County Monaghan’s crown, Glaslough is famed for its fabulous floral displays and has won numerous national and international awards in recognition of the effort that local business and Tidy Towns volunteers put in to keeping the village beautiful.
First, get your bearings by downloading the free ‘One Village, Two Voices’ heritage trail app , and enjoy an hour-long walking tour of the village, through the Castle Leslie Estate.
A visit to the Castle Leslie Estate is a must. The Lodge is a lovely spot for a coffee or lunch, while afternoon tea in the Castle itself is a real treat. Book ahead, where possible. The Estate is also known for its world-class equestrian facilities, so why not avail of expert tuition and enjoy a gentle hack or exhilarating cross-country ride? Alternatively, a horse-drawn carriage ride is a wonderfully relaxing way to take in the glorious Glaslough countryside.
Glaslough has a thriving arts scene, home to the Mallon Studio, where acclaimed artist Joan and her husband, ceramicist Joe, work and reside. Make your own masterpiece at Busy Bee Ceramics, where classes and workshops are offered on a regular basis.
Eating out in Glaslough is another highlight of a visit. Ambledown Cottage pizzeria is perhaps the most Instagrammable restaurant in the County, set in pretty stone cottages festooned with colourful potted flowers. Nab yourself a table by the fire in the winter, or a spot in the courtyard if the weather allows.
Of course, this chocolate-box village has its own artisan chocolate shop. Glaslough Chocolate’s sweet treats are hand-made using the finest ingredients and locally sourced produce, where possible. Their coffee and hot chocolate comes highly recommended, too. And for mouth-watering gelato, the family-run Pocono is the place to go,
Time your visit for the last Saturday of the month, when the Glaslough Village Market takes place, with over 30 stalls selling locally made food and crafts. Shopping in Glaslough for furniture and antiques is another highlight, with Castle View Antiques and Green Gables Collectables and Curios situated in the village itself, plus MK Woodcrafts just outside.
