Things to do in Monaghan

Be Our Guest, Erin Lynch, Hillgrove Hotel

In the first in a new series, we ask the people whose job it is to ensure visitors have an amazing stay in Monaghan exactly what it means to go the extra mile, what is special about where they work, and the Monaghan gems they frequent themselves – and recommend to visitors.

Kicking off is Erin Lynch, Guest Experience Manager at the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan Town.

Erin Lynch, Hillgrove Hotel

Erin started off as a part-time accommodation assistant in the hotel back in 1995; her career has now come full circle – via Dublin and Vermont – and for the past year and a half, Erin has worked as Guest Experience Manager at the Hillgrove, where she is responsible for enhancing the guest experience.

“I’m a real people person,” Erin tells us. “My job can be so challenging and rewarding. The Easter break is one of the best times to visit the Hillgrove Hotel, and we’re busy preparing for our annual Easter Egg Hunt with a programme of kids’ activities; the atmosphere around the hotel will be buzzing!”

Why Visit Monaghan?

“Our location here on the border means we attract guests from both North and South. Monaghan is also a great base for those wishing to explore attractions in neighbouring towns, and it’s not too far from both Belfast and Dublin,” Erin says. “Also, the people here are just so warm and welcoming.”

What are the best things to do in Monaghan?

My must-visits would have to be Rossmore Park just on the outskirts of Monaghan Town. It is a tranquil forest and a beautiful place to visit.

With the giants’ trail they have incorporated into the forest and all the history, you could spend hours there just exploring and soaking up the beautiful surroundings.

The castle trail is a great way to learn more about the history of Lord Rossmore and the estate itself.”

“Another must is Mullaghmore Equestrian Centre which is located in Tydavnet, only 10 minutes from Monaghan Town and the Hillgrove Hotel.

The Centre is run by the McCarra family who have been involved in all aspects of the horse industry for years.  They provide horse-riding lessons and it is a place I always recommend to families and groups.”

What are your favourite Monaghan restaurants?

“The local Indian Restaurant, Eastern Balti in Monaghan Town is a personal favourite. Their dishes are so full of flavour and their service is exceptional.”

“I also recommend PK’s Bar here at the Hillgrove Hotel. There is a wide variety of dishes on the menu and lots of options for children.”

The Hillgrove Hotel is part of the Inua Collection and Cliste Hospitality, which has 14 hotels in Southern Ireland and one hotel in Belfast.

A 2-night stay for a family of four (two adults and two children under 12) at the Hillgrove Hotel this Easter costs from €350, including accommodation in a family room, breakfast and FREE kids’ clubs for the little ones.
