About Lynsey
Lynsey McKernan is a professional artist with a practice rooted in plein air painting and landscape observation.
She originally graduated in Fashion Design from NCAD, and went on to have a successful career working as a designer for international retailers. Her talent and passion for colour and trend continue to inform her artwork to this day, and she specialises in mostly oil-based landscape painting.
Combining years of creative experience with a welcoming teaching style, Lynsey helps people of all abilities discover the rewards of painting outdoors and connecting more deeply with the landscape around them.
What to expect from a masterclass with Lynsey
This experience offers visitors a unique way to connect with Monaghan’s natural beauty through
creativity. Participants learn the traditional practice of plein air painting directly in the landscape, rather than from photographs or in a studio.
With all materials provided and no experience required, it is an accessible, memorable and authentic creative experience so you will come away with not just a personal artwork, but a lasting connection to the place.
Workshops typically last three hours and take place in the stunning surrounds of Rossmore Forest Park, just outside Monaghan Town, although the location can be tailored to suit the needs of a particular group, if desired.
The Natural Beauty of Monaghan
Known for its drumlins or ‘little hills’, what Monaghan lacks in coastal location it more than makes up for in glorious countryside. A county of contrasts, from glistening lake lands and lush forests to sweeping, panoramic countryside views dotted with traditional farmhouses. North Monaghan and the area of Sliabh Beagh, by contrast, is known for its wild upland boglands and abundance of flora and fauna.
The Practicalities
Lynsey’s masterclasses take place in groups of 4-14, and cost €55 per person.
The activity is suitable for beginners, aspiring artists, solo travellers, couples, friends, adult groups, creative groups, corporate team-building groups, and visitors looking for a unique outdoor experience. Suitable for ages 16+ (or younger when accompanied by an adult).
Participants are advised to bring weather-appropriate outdoor clothing, suitable footwear for forest terrain, and a camping stool if preferred. Participants may also wish to bring water for drinking and an apron to protect clothing. All painting materials and equipment are provided.

Time your visit to coincide with Monaghan Town Tours’ fabulous free tours of Rossmore Forest Park or Monaghan Town; the latter take place on Saturday mornings at 11am, March-September and no booking is required. Monaghan’s award-winning County Museum at the Peace Campus is well worth a visit, for its brilliant Bordering Realities exhibition which explores Monaghan people and stories and the idea of borders in our lives.
