Poetry Masterclass , with Nell Regan
The award-winning Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen pays homage to one of Ireland’s best-loved poets in his hometown through an immersive exhibition experience. In addition to the permanent display, an ongoing programme of events and workshops celebrates Kavanagh’s life’s work and serves to inspire future generations of poets and writers.
Poetry writing workshops take place as part of wider festivals or can be arranged on a bespoke basis. Facilitators such as the wonderful Nell Regan guide would-be poets on their journey.
About Nell
Nell Regan is an acclaimed poet and non-fiction writer whose latest collection is Thirty-Six Views of the Sugarloaf (Arlen House). She has been a Fellow at the International Writing Programme, Iowa, recipient of a Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship and Arts Council Literature Bursaries.

What to expect from a masterclass with Nell
Masterclasses are relaxed yet stimulating, and suitable for all levels of experience, whether aspiring poet or a complete beginner.
A class will typically start by taking a look at different poems to get an idea of possible ‘ways in’. Nell also takes participants beyond the classroom and out into the landscape as part of her immersive poetry workshops Participants will then spend time with the exhibition and settle on one or more pieces to work from, ‘sketching’ ideas and fragments of poems.
The class will gather again to read and discuss some of these ‘sketches’/ draft poems and look at possible ways forward.
Poetry Writing in Monaghan
Monaghan’s breath-taking landscapes, rural villages and unhurried pace of life provide the backdrop to Kavanagh’s best-loved works. You too can be inspired by the simple way of life and the quiet simplicity of a landscape which has remained largely unchanged for decades.
The Practicalities
Workshops vary in length, but typically last 2-3 hours.
No prior experience is necessary! Workshops can also be tailored for younger, school-aged groups, from 3rd class primary and up.

Pause a while down by the River Fane; the poetry jukebox is a ‘unique and innovative’ public art project, where poetry can be enjoyed for free by everybody.
The jukebox forms part of the Patrick Kavanagh Trail, which also features iconic sites from Kavanagh’s life and work, including Billy Brennan’s Barn and the Kavanagh Homeplace.
Sup a pint of ‘Stony Grey IPA’ at Brehon Brewhouse, a micro-brewery set on a working dairy farm.
