With a raft of excellent outdoor dining options in the county, many offering a welcoming water bowl, pups (and their owners) staying in Monaghan are spoiled for choice.

Coffee Break with Barbara in Monaghan Town is proudly pup-friendly. The Meeting Place at the Creighton Hotel in Clones boasts a large covered and heated area complete with barista coffee dock. Dinkin’s has an outdoor dining area, perfect for pets. While Granny Graham’s also in Monaghan Town, currently serving gourmet hot chocolate, is an outdoor café open to all. The latter is also handily located for the Monaghan Canal Greenway, a 4.2km trail which follows the route of the former Ulster Canal.   

Heading south, 2 West Street in Castleblayney is a café and lifestyle store a pretty outdoor area perfect for four legs, as well as two.

At Matilda’s Bakery and Delicatessen in Carrickmacross, you may spot Rusty, the resident Jack Russell, sniffing after the legendary black pudding sausage rolls in the new covered outdoor seating area. Next door, the award-winning Courthouse restaurant welcomes dogs in its downstairs bar area.

Best Outdoor Adventures and Parks for Dogs in Monaghan

Monaghan is gaining a reputation as a dog-friendly place to stay and visit, not least because of the wide array of pawfect parks and outdoor areas.

Sliabh Beagh in North Monaghan offers wilderness terrain and is a dog walkers’ paradise, incredibly scenic and with several trails to choose from, from 6.5km in length. Sliabh Beagh Adventures offers guided hikes of the locality and dogs are very welcome to tag along.

Rossmore Forest Park on the outskirts of Monaghan Town, has trails aplenty, as well as lakes for your pooch to cool off in on a warm day. As does Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney; there are plenty of picnic spots to choose from in both parks, as well as year-round on-site refreshments.

Last but not least, Carrickmacross is home to the county’s first dedicated dog park (opening spring 2022), with sections for large and small pups.
